Mancunian Music Maestro Guy Garvey joined in the recent campaign by local people to stop Bury Council's then Con-Dem Coalition from closing down Unsworth Library. He told how he had spent many an hour in that library, reading, thinking great thoughts and composing Elbow lyrics. The Library was supsequently given a reprieve for a year, in response to petitions and lots of publicity but now that Labour are back in power (after a seat in Ramsbottom (really!) had to be decided between 2 candidates who polled the same amount of votes drawing a short straw & the Labour candidate won, giving Labour a majority of 1 on Bury Council) it may be saved long term.
I was in the car on Tuesday, going along Bury Old Road in the vicinity of Armstrong's Chippy (self-styled 'Home of the Jumbo Cod') when I spotted Guy strolling along, looking up at sky. Perhaps he was on the look out for Starlings (see/hear 'Seldom Seen Kid' album for this) or some other species of bird. Made my day & prompted me to listen to One Day Like This & re-live happy memories of last 2 concerts at the MEN. Good Man, Yourself.
